    SPREAD THE NEWS
If you are excited about what you have learned in the AYA newsletter, please share it with your friends. Some of the most successful exchanges occur when friends and neighbors host students simultaneously! It gives you the chance to share experiences and allows you to learn about a variety of cultures. If anyone you know might be interested, please forward us their name and e-mail address so we can put them on our e-mail list. Write to Stella Jacaruso at sjacaruso@aifs.org to subscribe.

    Country of the Month: Kyrgyzstan

Located in central Asia, Kyrgyzstan was once part of Russia, until becoming independent in 1991. Kyrgyzstan is completely landlocked and very mountainous.

Kyrgyzstan is very abundant in natural resources. They have signficant deposits of gold, coal, and oil. These resources are a great help to the country's economy because they are desirable to many countries and can be exported in exchange for goods that Kyrgyzstan itself cannot produce.

Home to roughly 1 million people, Bishkek is the capital, as well as the largest city, in Kyrgyzstan. The city has become Kyrgyzstan's industrial and financial center. Bishkek is considered one of the "greenest" cities in the world, due to its numerous parks and allées.

    "Firsts" in Michigan and Tennessee

Carolin and Natcha, or Cartoon as we know her, have had a big experience in coming to America. Carolin is from Germany and Cartoon is from Thailand, and they have had a lot of "firsts" here in the states. Cartoon joined the track team and ran in the local 5k turkey trot. The girls attended the Snow Ball Dance, visited Disney World, and traveled as close as we could get to Canada without a visa.

While visiting my sister in Nashville, we ran out of gas but the girls made the best of it, as you can see: they played in the leaves while we waited for someone to stop and help us. Our two host daughters have become like sisters and love sharing their lives and encouraging each other. They have brought a real sense of joy into our lives as their host parents.

    Fun Facts: Kyrgyzstan

The country does not border any large bodies of water, but there are 3 lakes found within Kyrgyzstan.

Lake Issyk Kul, located in Kyrgyzstan, is known as the "warm sea" because it never freezes.

The currency of Kyrgyzstan is Som.
